Hiring P/T Seasonal Crossing Guard Substitute
The Mendham Borough Police Department is seeking applications to immediately fill a vacant Substitute Crossing Guard position.
Selected Candidates must be able to perform the following:
- Assemble children and other pedestrians behind curb lines awaiting traffic lulls or signal changes.
- Interrupt traffic and escort children and other pedestrians into the street, allowing them to cross safely.
- Instruct children in proper procedures for safe street crossing.
- Expedite the movement of children and pedestrians.
- Observe vehicle movements and, safety permitting, records license numbers of vehicles whose drivers are jeopardizing safe street crossing by operating their vehicles in an unsafe manner. Report such drivers to the Police Department.
Candidates must possess a general:
- Knowledge of basic roadway safety rules.
- Knowledge of basic safe driving rules and procedures.
- Knowledge of traffic safety principles, laws, and regulations.
- Knowledge of basic first aid.
- Ability to obtain the attention and cooperation of school children and other pedestrians.
- Ability to identify traffic hazards.
- Ability to observe and record license numbers and incident details accurately.
- Ability to follow written and oral directions.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, particularly with children.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public.
Candidates must also be able to meet the physical demands of the job which requires being on your feet for an extended period and able to hold a handheld stop sign. Must also be able to work outside in unfavorable weather conditions.
Candidates must be a High School Graduate or possess a GED equivalent.
Training will be provided to the selected candidates.
